Anthropic has begun merging Claude's general conversation features with Cowork, its long-form workspace, into a single interface. Instead of users having to choose the type of task first, It's a structure where Claude assesses the scope and nature of the request to select the necessary features.
Claude Docs and Claude Slides, which are used to create documents and presentations, have also been released, and Claude Design is now available within regular conversations. This change is designed to allow users to work seamlessly within the same conversational context, from writing documents to creating slides and visual designs.
However, This is different from a full official launch, which takes effect immediately for all users. The integration features will first be rolled out to the Pro and Max plans over the next few weeks, and Docs, Slides, and Design will be available in beta on paid plans. The Team and Free plans will be added later.
| Why Did They Merge Chat and Cowork?
Previously, users had to choose between "General Chat" for short questions and "Cowork" for tasks involving files or time-consuming processes. Anthropic explained that users found it inconvenient that the process of deciding which tool to use was disconnected from the context of their work.
After the integration, you can start with a simple question in the same conversation and then naturally transition to longer tasks, such as writing reports or researching materials. If Claude is needed, it will leverage Cowork's work features and existing connectors, skills, and project context.
Anthropic explained that even after closing the laptop, the system continues to process some tasks, and users can check their progress on their smartphones. The system is designed so that users select their preferred verification method when assigning tasks and retain the final decision-making authority.
| New Features Added to Claude Docs and Slides
Claude Docs is a feature that lets you create documents within a conversation and either edit them yourself or ask Claude to make changes. According to Reuters, you can export the results to Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
Claude Slides lets you create presentation drafts, edit slide elements, and leave comments requesting revisions. It also allows you to deliver presentations directly within Claude or download them in PowerPoint and PDF formats.
With Claude Design now part of the conversation, we can create reports, presentation materials, and visual content all within the same context. The key is to reduce the need to explain each step again in separate tools.
| Workflow within a single conversation
For example, after analyzing weekly sales data and creating a report, you can request a set of slides for management using the same information. Since both outputs are generated from the same conversation, it's easier to align key figures and expressions.
The Docs, Slides, and Design files you create can be opened via shareable links and viewed on your phone. You can either move elements yourself or ask Claude to make changes using natural language.
Anthropic also provided an example of scheduling recurring tasks to generate recurring reports. However, the specific features available may vary depending on the pricing plan, release date, and settings configured by the organization administrator.
| Target Audience and Beta Status
The unified Claude will be rolled out gradually over the next few weeks to Pro and Max users on the web, desktop, and mobile. Anthropic explained that existing Cowork users' conversations, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills will remain intact.
Design in Docs, Slides, and Chat is available in beta on paid plans. Team and Free plans will receive the integrated experience at a later date, and Enterprise plans allow organization administrators to choose when to enable the feature.
The beta phase is a stage where features and functionality are subject to change. In particular, you need to test it in real-world use to see how accurately complex formatting is preserved when exported to PowerPoint or Word, and whether the context remains consistent throughout long documents.
| How the Competition in Enterprise AI Is Changing
Until now, the focus has been on integrating AI features into word processing and presentation programs. Claude Docs and Slides, on the other hand, use AI conversations as a starting point for work and focus on creating finished products within that context.
This shift is also intensifying competition not only with Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 but also with integrated AI work environments like ChatGPT Work. Users are likely to compare not only the quality of the models’ responses but also the quality of file creation, collaboration, and integration with and export from existing business systems.
From a company's perspective, in addition to convenience, data access permissions, task approvals, review of results, and audit logs are also becoming increasingly important. The more AI automatically selects various tools, the clearer it needs to be regarding which actions require approval and when.
| Things to Check Along with Convenience
The updates that have been confirmed this time include the phased integration of Chat and Cowork, the beta release of Docs and Slides, and the integration of Design into conversations. It doesn't mean that all plans have been rolled out or that all three features are now in their official versions.
While this reduces the burden on users when choosing a tool, there is also a possibility that Claude might misclassify a request or start a task that is longer than necessary. When accessing external apps and files, you need to manually check the scope of permissions and verification settings.
Going forward, key evaluation criteria will include the actual release schedule for the free and team plans, enterprise management features, compatibility with Office and Google Docs formats, and the consistency of multiple outputs generated within the same conversation.
