When people think of AI, they tend to think of chatbots or image-generation services first. However, the area where you can most directly experience the benefits of AI in everyday life may actually be small, specialized devices like hearing aids.
Phonak, a brand of the Swiss hearing solutions company Sonova, has unveiled its next-generation hearing aid platform, “EON.” EON is A platform that analyzes ambient sounds in real time to distinguish between speech and background noise, and automatically selects features appropriate for the locationWow. It’s gone a step beyond simply being a hearing aid that amplifies sound—it’s practically a tiny AI device that can determine what kind of environment the user is in.
| Two AI systems operate simultaneously inside the hearing aid
The key to EON is that it involves two AI systems with different roles working together.
‘Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0’It uses a deep learning neural network to separate speech from background noise in real time. It ensures that the voices needed for conversation are transmitted more clearly, even when people are speaking from multiple directions or in noisy environments.
‘AutoSense OS AI 8.0’It continuously analyzes the surrounding sound environment and automatically activates the appropriate combination of features for the situation. Whether you're in a quiet room, a noisy restaurant, or outdoors in the wind, the hearing aid adjusts its operation on its own, so you don't have to change the settings every time.
It's easier to understand if you think of it as a structure where one handles the sound itself and the other oversees the entire system.
| Twice as Good at Understanding Speech?
Phonak explained that with Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0, users are twice as likely to understand words, regardless of the direction from which they come. Reuters also reported, citing a company spokesperson, that the technology allows users to understand speech twice as well while reducing the effort required to listen.
However, these figures should not be interpreted to mean that hearing ability is exactly doubled for all users in all environments. The comparison in the official data is between hearing aids with the feature turned on and those with it turned off, both under the same settings, and these figures are based on research results provided by the company. Actual results may vary depending on an individual’s hearing condition, the surrounding environment, and how the hearing aid is adjusted.
Still, it's clear why this feature is drawing attention. Hearing aid users face particular challenges not simply in quiet environments, but in places where multiple sounds mix together, such as restaurants or public transportationWow. It's important to note that AI is evolving to identify specific speech sounds rather than just turning up the volume.
| New HYPERSONIC Chip
Real-time AI requires a lot of processing power, but hearing aids are devices with significant battery and size constraints. To address this issue, the EON features the newly developed “HYPERSONIC” chip.
According to Sonova, this chip uses 37% less power than the previous generation. As a result, the EON is 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous generation of Sphere, and It can be used for up to 38 hours on a single charge. Actual battery life varies depending on the battery's condition, the degree of hearing loss, ambient noise, streaming usage, and the features you have enabled.
"WindBlock 2.0" for outdoor use has also been added. The company stated that this feature can reduce wind noise by up to 50 decibels and improve the signal-to-noise ratio by up to 30 decibels. This feature is designed to make speech easier to understand not only during indoor conversations but also while walking or on the go.
| Connecting beyond smartphones to sounds in public spaces
EON supports Bluetooth Classic, Roger Direct, and Auracast all in one device. It’s designed not only for smartphone calls and music streaming but also to allow users to hear public announcements directly through their hearing aids at compatible museums, theaters, and airports.
In particular, Auracast is a technology that allows multiple people to receive the same audio broadcast on their own wireless devices. If the number of facilities supporting this technology increases, hearing aids may evolve beyond being personal medical devices to serve as everyday wireless audio devices.
The product line consists of the “Audéo EON Sphere” and “Audéo EON R,” which support hearing loss ranging from mild to severe, and the “CROS EON R,” designed for single-sided hearing loss. The dedicated app and hearing aid fitting software have also been updated.
| EON is also part of Sonova's technology competition and growth strategy
EON will be available for pre-order starting August 24 through certified hearing care professionals in the U.S. The rollout will expand to major markets such as Germany, France, the U.K., Italy, and Australia starting in mid-September, and it is scheduled to launch in more countries thereafter. The price has not yet been announced, but Sonova Plans to position EON in the premium market upon its initial launchWow.
In the hearing aid market, new technology serves as a key factor in accelerating replacement demand among existing users and attracting first-time buyers. Reuters also noted that EON is a new product that will support Sonova’s medium-term growth goals. In essence, this launch combines improvements in consumer features with the company’s market expansion strategy.
| User Experience
The change that EON demonstrates is that AI isn't confined to massive data centers. It can be seen as a real-world example of on-device AI that instantly processes sound within a small hearing aid and adjusts its functions to adapt to the ever-changing environment.
In this field, the key metrics aren't the number of model parameters or benchmark scores. Changes that you can actually feel in your daily life—such as whether you can still hear the other person clearly even in noisy places, or whether listening fatigue is reduced when wearing them for long periods—are more important.Yeah.
Of course, we’ll need to wait for independent evaluations after its release to see whether the performance figures provided by the manufacturer hold true for a wide range of users and in real-world environments. Still, the EON is a product that clearly demonstrates the value AI can create when it’s used to alleviate everyday inconveniences rather than simply showcasing flashy features.
