On September 23, 2026, the advertising agency WPP opened a production facility called Devon’s Point in East London, England. The approximately 34,000-square-foot space brings together filming, live broadcasting, editing, AI-powered virtual production, and creator collaboration capabilities.
Starting with this facility, WPP plans to establish similar hubs on every continent where the company's production organizations operate. While the opening of the London facility has been confirmed, plans for subsequent facilities around the world are still in the planning stages.
| The Production Process, All in One Place
Devon’s Point features a virtual production studio, multiple filming spaces, rapid filming and editing facilities, and a post-production suite. It is designed to allow for the combined use of physical props and digital backgrounds during filming, and to refine the resulting content for various channel formats.
As advertising work has branched out into short videos, live streams, and social media posts, there’s been a growing need to produce multiple versions of the same idea. WPP believes that keeping planning and production close together can reduce the time spent on preparation and revisions.
| Tasks Handled by AI and Humans, Respectively
WPP Production is in charge of facility operations, with staff from HEX Studio—which specializes in generative AI and virtual production technology—also participating. The plan is to link this with WPP Open, WPP’s marketing platform, to integrate the production output with media operations.
Even if AI assists with some aspects of content creation, tasks such as planning shoots, making brand decisions, editing, and quality control remain the work of humans. What this announcement confirms is that they have integrated the facilities and workflows; it does not mean that they have automated the entire ad production process.
| Why Do Advertising Agencies Invest in Facilities?
Advertisers want to quickly adapt a single campaign to multiple platforms and regions. If production and distribution are handled separately, they may have to recreate the same creative or repeat the approval process.
WPP describes its London facility as part of its organizational integration and growth plans currently underway this year. It cannot be concluded that facility investments alone will lead to an increase in new contracts or revenue. Actual results must be assessed based on production time, quality, and whether clients return for repeat business.
| Remaining Challenges in Global Expansion
Even if the same facilities are built in different regions, the workforce, production culture, and customer demand will vary. It’s important to figure out how to integrate new technology with the existing production team and how to maintain brand standards and content quality even during rapid mass production.
The place that just opened is Devon’s Point in London. WPP's expansion plans for its hubs on other continents remain to be seen. We will need to wait for the follow-up opening schedules and actual production results before we can assess the impact on the advertising industry as a whole.
